What underground tank removal involves on a real site in Wollongong

A buried fuel tank is a confined space full of flammable vapour in ground it has probably been leaking into. So the job runs in a fixed order: prove it is gas free, dig with care, handle the pit soil to the consultant's remediation action plan (RAP), hand over the pack.

    Locate and isolate

Tanks found from records, geophysics or old fill points. Services disconnected, fencing and traffic control up.

    Pump out and purge

Product and sludge out, residual liquid by vacuum truck to a licensed liquid waste facility. Lines drained back, then nitrogen, water, air and inert gas purging.

    Gas free certificate first

Vapour space tested with a calibrated gas detector. Certificate from a licensed assessor. No certificate, no lift.

    Slab, pit and lift

Slab saw cut, concrete and fill sand stripped by excavator, tank lifted whole by crane to a truck and on to a scrap metal facility. Destruction certificate issued.

    Pit soil and handover

Pit soil classified as it comes out and tracked to a licensed facility to the RAP. Backfill, compaction, then the pack for the consultant's validation.

    Scope we take on

Tank pit excavation. Tank cleaning and residue removal. Nitrogen purging and gas freeing, certificate from a licensed assessor. Lifting tanks whole and loading out to scrap. Fuel line, dispenser and canopy removal. Forecourt slab and building demolition. Contaminated soil excavation to the RAP, every load tracked to a licensed facility. Pit dewatering. Validation handover with the documentation. Abandonment in situ where the consultant and regulator allow it.

    What we do not do

We do not cut tanks up in place, do cold cutting or hot work on tanks, or do heavy steel cutting and wire sawing. The tank comes out whole once gas free certified; slab saw cutting ahead of the dig is in scope.

    Plant and crews

Our own excavators from 0.8 tonne to 35 tonne; the Parramatta tank pit ran 24 tonne and 30 tonne machines. Crane load out and vacuum trucks are arranged per job. Our own crews handle the pit soil, asbestos in soil and hazmat under the group's licences rather than subcontracting, to written confined space, excavation and unexpected finds procedures. See steel recycling and contaminated land remediation.

    Licences and systems

Conditional Restricted Demolition Licence from SafeWork NSW, the class that covers a chemical installation such as a service station. Class A friable asbestos licence. NSW EPA waste transport licence. Queensland demolition licence. ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 certified. Numbers are on the licences and insurance page.

    Who we work for

Fuel companies decommissioning service stations, and the environmental consultants working for them. Infrastructure contractors with a servo in the corridor. Developers and builders who find a tank mid excavation. Councils and depot owners. Defence estate managers and mine closure teams. Buyers, financiers and insurers who need proof the tank is gone.

Worth knowing: the number of tanks, what is left in them and what the RAP says about the pit soil drive the price. Send the site history and the RAP and we price the whole package.

    Where we work in Wollongong

We have not removed a tank in the Illawarra yet. The tank work on the books is in Sydney. Crew and excavators come down from our Marrickville yard with the same method and paperwork, and an estimator walks the site first. Sites we take on in Wollongong include highway service stations on the Princes Highway and Motorway, fuel infrastructure at Port Kembla and the steelworks, marine fuel at Port Kembla harbour and Shellharbour, depots and works yards at Unanderra, Kembla Grange and Albion Park Rail, council depots across Wollongong, Shellharbour and Kiama, and Nowra and the Shoalhaven. Hazmat on the same sites: asbestos and hazmat removal Sydney and NSW.

Tank and fuel site work we have done in New South Wales

The one direct underground tank project on the books is the BP service station at 435 Church Street, Parramatta, for CPB on the Parramatta Light Rail: four petrol and diesel USTs and the LPG tanks purged, gas free certified and lifted by crane to a scrap metal facility, building demolished. In 2017 we also removed a large diesel tank from a distribution warehouse at Villawood. Related work includes the Emu Plains site clearance with hydrocarbon soil remediation, classification, tracking and independent validation and the slurry plant decommissioning at The Bays, five steel process tanks with residue processed before transport. The whole service is on the UST and underground tank removal hub.

Questions we get from Wollongong clients

Who issues the gas free certificate?

A licensed assessor, not us. The vapour space is tested with a calibrated gas detector after purging and the certificate is issued before the lift. On the Parramatta job the tanks were purged with nitrogen, water, air and inert gas.

Does the tank come out whole?

Yes. Once the certificate is issued the tank is lifted whole by crane onto a truck and sent to a scrap metal facility. A destruction certificate follows.

What happens to the soil under the tank in Wollongong?

It comes out with the pit, classified as we dig, every load tracked to a licensed facility under the RAP. Validation is the consultant's job; we hand back the dockets and certificates. See contaminated soil removal Wollongong.

An excavator has hit a tank mid excavation. What now?

Stop work around it, keep ignition sources away and call us. We assess, degas, remove and document the find. Half our tank calls start this way.

Other places we remove underground tanks

We also remove underground tanks in Sydney, Newcastle, Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. The full service is on the UST and underground tank removal hub, every specialist line is under all specialist services.
