Why it matters on a demolition job
Construction and demolition waste is one of the biggest waste streams in Australia. Most of it is concrete, brick, steel and timber, and nearly all of that can be used again if it is kept clean and kept apart. Mixed together in a skip, the same material becomes landfill and a gate fee. So for us, sustainability starts with something practical: how the building comes apart, in what order, and where each material goes.
It usually saves our clients money too. Every load of clean concrete crushed on site is a load not trucked away, and a load of fill not trucked back in. Every tonne of steel that goes over the weighbridge is a credit on the price. On a demolition site, good environmental practice and a good price tend to point the same way.
Our goals
These are the standards we hold every Perfect Contracting site to. They come from our group sustainability and waste policy and our ISO 14001 system, and they are checked through our site inspections and internal audits.
Separate at source
Concrete, brick, steel, timber, cardboard and plastics go into their own streams as the building comes apart. Clean, single material loads are what recyclers will take, and they keep the tip fees down.
Reuse concrete and brick on site
Where the site has room and the material tests clean, we crush and screen it on site so it goes back in as fill or road base instead of leaving on a truck.
Recover every tonne of steel
Structural steel, plant and reinforcing bar are cut, weighed and sent for recycling, with the scrap value credited against your price. See steel recycling and scrap recovery.
Hazardous material out first
Asbestos, lead paint, PCBs and contaminated soil are removed before demolition starts, under our own licences, and taken by licensed carriers to licensed facilities with the tracking paperwork to match. See lead paint and hazardous coatings.
Look after the neighbours and the ground
Dust suppression, sediment and water controls, noise management and spill kits on every site. Our target is zero environmental incidents, the same target we first wrote down in 2017.

Where we've been
Sustainability did not arrive at Perfect Contracting with a policy document. It started on site, with skips and sorting, and it has grown with the size of the jobs.
Perfect Contracting starts in Sydney
Demolition and strip out work for builders around the Sydney metro area. At the time, most mixed strip out waste in the industry went straight to landfill.
Our first written target
On back to base strip outs we started separating materials on site in a tub bin system, so whole skips left as clean, recyclable loads. We set ourselves a target of recycling more than half of everything we removed from our clients' sites, with zero environmental incidents.

Perfect Strip Out and Demolition starts as its own business for fit out strip outs and smaller demolition, carrying the same habits of sorting and recovery.
ISO 14001 certified
Our environmental management system was certified to ISO 14001:2015 by Sustainable Certification, a JAS-ANZ accredited body, as part of one integrated system with ISO 9001 quality and ISO 45001 safety. See certification and awards.
The waste hierarchy becomes group policy
Our Sustainability, Waste, Pollution and Resource Management Policy put the order in writing for every site: avoid, reduce, reuse, recycle, recover, and send to disposal only when nothing else works. Separation of concrete, steel, soils, timber, cardboard and plastics became mandatory.
What that looks like on real jobs
Corrimal Coke Works, for Legacy Property
Principal contractor on the demolition and land rehabilitation of a heritage coke works. Material was separated at source, the concrete and brick crushed on site into graded stockpiles, and over 95 percent of the demolition material was recycled. Read the Corrimal case study.
Emu Plains, for Akura
Demolition and remediation of an industrial site. Concrete was crushed and screened on site to road base specification, and hydrocarbon contaminated soil was treated on site in controlled biopiles, then independently validated. See the Emu Plains project.
Two jobs at Horsley Park
About 5,000 tonnes of asbestos taken out of an old manufacturing facility under enclosure and negative pressure, and PCB contaminated soil remediated at the old Austral brick plant, so the land could be built on again. See the asbestos job and the PCB remediation.
Where we're going
A lot of the big demolition work in Australia over the next decade will be coal and gas plants, mine sites, old industrial land and the first generation of wind farms reaching the end of their lives. That is where we are taking the business, and it is where recovery and remediation matter most.
Heavy industry and the energy transition
Power stations, processing plants and mine sites carry thousands of tonnes of steel and concrete. We are building our crews and plant to take them apart with as much as possible recovered. See industrial demolition, mine demolition and closure and renewable energy decommissioning.
More treatment and reuse on site
Every load treated or reused on site is a truck that never goes on the road. We will keep pushing for on site crushing, bioremediation and reuse of clean fill wherever the site, the testing and the approvals allow. See soil and environmental remediation.
One home yard at Granville
The group is moving its office and plant yard into its own site at Granville in early 2027, so our machines are serviced, stored and sent out from one place instead of several rented ones.
Less fuel, less idle plant
Our policy commits us to cutting fuel, energy, material and water use. The work ahead is matching machine size to each job, cutting idle time, and planning load outs so trucks run full.
Buying better
When we choose suppliers and subcontractors we check their environmental procedures before they are engaged, and we give preference to Indigenous businesses and suppliers with good environmental practice.
Keep the certificate earning its place
Our ISO 14001 certification is due for renewal in early 2027. The aim is to go through it with nothing outstanding, and to keep this page updated with real results from our jobs.
Questions we get about sustainability
How much of a demolition job can be recycled?
It depends on the building, but concrete, brick and steel make up most of the weight on most jobs, and nearly all of it can be recycled when it is separated cleanly. At Corrimal Coke Works over 95 percent of the demolition material was recycled. We can estimate the likely recovery when we price your job.
Can crushed concrete be reused on my site?
Usually, yes. In NSW, crushed concrete and brick from a demolition site can be reused on that site or supplied to another one under the EPA's recovered aggregate resource recovery order and exemption, provided it meets the limits in the order and the sampling and record keeping is done properly. We manage that as part of the job.
What paperwork do I get for my sustainability reporting?
Weighbridge dockets for steel and other recycled loads, waste and asbestos tracking records, disposal receipts from the licensed facilities, and a recycling summary at handover.
How do you deal with asbestos and contaminated waste?
It comes out before the demolition starts, under our own licences. It is wrapped or contained, taken by licensed carriers to licensed facilities and tracked from site to tip, and the area gets an independent clearance inspection before the next trade moves in.
Is your environmental system certified?
Yes. Our environmental management system has been certified to ISO 14001:2015 since November 2023 by Sustainable Certification, a JAS-ANZ accredited body. It sits in one integrated system with our ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certifications.
