Biggest Demolition Companies in Wollongong and the Illawarra (2026)

Corrimal industrial site aerial before/during decommissioning context

Search for demolition in Wollongong and most of what comes back is house demolition and excavation for residential blocks. That is a different job from decommissioning plant at Port Kembla, demolishing a heritage industrial site in the northern suburbs or taking down a hospital or university building that stays open around you. This guide is for builders, asset owners, industrial operators, councils and government agencies with a commercial, industrial or infrastructure job in Wollongong, Shellharbour and the Illawarra.

If you have been asked to find the biggest demolition companies to price a major Illawarra job, this is the shortlist. This guide is written by Perfect Contracting and we are one of the companies on it. We put ourselves first and kept to facts throughout. The other contractors follow in alphabetical order, each described from its own published information or directory listing as at October 2026. Verify licences and insurances with SafeWork NSW and the insurer before engaging anyone on this list, including Perfect Contracting.

The biggest demolition contractors working in Wollongong and the Illawarra

Perfect Contracting

Perfect Contracting was founded in Sydney in 2010 and works across NSW and Queensland from offices in Marrickville and Slacks Creek, about an hour and a half from Wollongong. It is part of Perfect Group, which also includes Perfect Concrete Care, Perfect Remediation, Perfect Strip Out, Perfect Hire and DeconCut. Its work covers structural and high reach demolition, friable and non-friable asbestos removal, industrial decommissioning, contaminated land remediation and civil.

Licences and systems: SafeWork NSW demolition licence AD211896 and Friable Asbestos Removal Licence AD212957, which covers both Class A and Class B work. Certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 under a single integrated management system. More than 100,000 hours were worked across the group last financial year without a single regulator notice.

Its high reach and remote controlled plant is owned, not hired: a Volvo EC480 high reach excavator at about 75 tonnes built up, and Brokk demolition robots, all run by its own operators. Illawarra work includes principal contractor on the heritage industrial site at Corrimal and tank farm demolition and site remediation at Unanderra for Cleanaway.

It can put a full crew with supervision and plant on an Illawarra or South Coast site at short notice for emergency make-safe, hazardous materials and difficult demolition work. See emergency demolition in Wollongong.

What to check before you engage a demolition contractor in the Illawarra

A high reach excavator and remote controlled demolition machines they own

Steelworks structures, tank farms, coke ovens and multi storey buildings in the Wollongong CBD all have the same problem: nobody should be standing inside or under them while they come apart. That is what a high reach excavator and remote controlled demolition machines are for. Many contractors who bid on Illawarra work do not own either and hire them in after the award, so the start date moves to suit the hire yard and the operator learns your site on day one. Ask every contractor on your shortlist to list the high reach and remote controlled machines they own, their reach and weight, and who operates them.

Enough people to put a full crew on your site

Wollongong is close enough to Sydney that a serious contractor can run a daily crew from Sydney or set up locally for a long job. The question is whether they have the people. A big industrial or hospital job needs a supervisor, licensed asbestos removalists, operators and labourers on site together, sometimes on two shifts. Ask how many of their own employees the contractor will commit, and how quickly they can add people if the program moves.

The right SafeWork NSW demolition licence

Anything over 15 metres, any chemical installation, any pre or post tensioned structure and any job using a crane over 100 tonnes needs a SafeWork NSW demolition licence, and most of Port Kembla qualifies on more than one count. Get the licence number, check it on the SafeWork register, and confirm the licence holder is the entity that will sign your subcontract rather than a related company.

Class A asbestos, not just Class B

Heavy industry around Port Kembla and the older commercial stock in Wollongong were built with friable asbestos in lagging, gaskets, fire doors and sprayed insulation. Removing it is Class A work with a Class A supervisor on site. A contractor holding only Class B has to subcontract the friable removal, which adds a company, a set of inductions and a hand over to your job. For a shortlist of specialist friable asbestos and hazmat contractors, see the biggest asbestos and hazardous materials removal companies in Australia.

A certified safety and environmental system

BlueScope, Port Kembla port operators, the university, health infrastructure and local government all expect ISO 45001, ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 audited by an accredited certifier. Get copies of the certificates, check the expiry dates, and ask for their regulator notice count for the last financial year.

Waste classification and contaminated ground

Illawarra industrial sites often sit on contaminated fill, and tank farms leave hydrocarbons in the ground. Steel and concrete can be recovered and recycled, but soil, residues and hazardous waste have to be classified and tracked to a licensed facility. Ask the contractor how they classify material, where each stream goes and what reporting you will get at the end.
