What a make safe involves on a real site in Wollongong

A structure that has burned, flooded, been hit or partly collapsed is not a normal demolition job. Bent beams store energy and move when cut. Burnt asbestos is friable. The job runs in a fixed order. If anyone is in danger, call 000 first, then call us.

    Call and triage

We ask what moved, what is above and below it and who is at risk. A supervisor comes to look.

    Exclusion zone

Red zones and safe zones marked out, fencing up, traffic control if the road is affected.

    Engineer's assessment

The structural engineer decides what is propped and what comes down. We install props and bracing to that design.

    Prop or pull down

Buckled steel rigged to a crane and cut free from an EWP with spotters watching movement. Unstable masonry taken down to a safe course.

    Hazmat, debris and handover

Burnt asbestos removed as friable under enclosure. Fire debris and flood mud out, every load tracked to a licensed facility. Photos and dockets in the pack.

    Scope we take on

Making fire, storm, flood, impact and collapse damaged commercial and industrial structures safe. Controlled partial demolition of unstable elements. Temporary propping and bracing installed to the structural engineer's design. Red zone and exclusion zone set up. Friable asbestos removal after fire under our own Class A licence. Hazmat clean up. Fire debris removal, loads tracked to licensed facilities. Flood damaged building strip and demolition. Working with the insurer and adjuster on scope and documentation. Then a rebuild ready handover.

    What we do not do

We do not design or certify temporary works; that is the engineer's job. We do not do restoration, drying, contents cleaning or make good fit out, and we do not sell steel cutting or wire sawing.

    Plant and crews

Our own excavators from 0.8 tonne to 35 tonne, high reach excavators and Brokk remote machines for structures nobody should stand under, hook trucks and lined skips, decontamination units and negative air plant. Cranes, EWPs and vacuum trucks are hired per job. Propping and shoring systems are hired and installed by our crew to the temporary works engineer's design, as on excavation shoring installation.

    Licences and systems

Licensed for demolition and Class A friable asbestos removal in New South Wales and Queensland; the New South Wales demolition licence class covers demolition involving floor propping. ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 management systems. Details are on the licences and insurance page.

    Who we work for

Insurers, loss adjusters and insurance builders. Building and facility managers with a facade or parapet shedding material. Strata managers of commercial buildings. Councils with a dangerous structure order. Industrial site owners after a fire. Principal contractors who need the emergency stage done first.

Worth knowing: what drives the price is what has to be propped, what has to come down, and whether asbestos has burned. Send the engineer's advice and photos and we price it as one package.

    Where we work in Wollongong

We have not done an emergency job in the Illawarra yet. The fire and flood work on the books is in New South Wales, in Sydney and the Northern Rivers. Crews and plant come down from our Marrickville yard. Sites in Wollongong include factories and warehouses at Port Kembla, Unanderra, Kembla Grange and Albion Park Rail, commercial buildings in the Wollongong CBD, Shellharbour and Kiama, council depots and works yards, the steelworks supply chain, and Nowra and the Shoalhaven.

Fire and flood work we have done in New South Wales

Three fire jobs: the fire damaged warehouse at Canterbury, mezzanine slabs propped so burnt brickwork could come out, buckled roof steel craned off, friable asbestos removed; the fire gutted warehouse at Crows Nest, split into safe and red zones with unstable facade walls braced first; and the Cleanaway facility at St Marys, where temporary propping and back propping of a precast wall held the main shed while fire damaged structure came down. After the 2022 floods we worked for insurance builders Johns Lyng Group and Paynters at the Presbyterian Church in Lismore and the Lismore school campuses, and for Lipman on Cabbage Tree Island: flood damaged linings and services stripped, flood mud out, asbestos removed by hand, independent clearances issued. More on the emergency demolition and make safe hub.

Questions we get from Wollongong clients

Who decides what gets propped and what comes down?

The structural engineer. We install props and bracing to the engineer's design, work the agreed sequence and get the engineer's sign off before handover. The design and the sign off are the engineer's, not ours.

Is asbestos a problem after a fire?

Usually, yes. Bonded sheeting that has burned becomes friable, so the area gets enclosure, negative air, independent air monitoring and clearance before structural work starts. We hold the Class A licence. See friable asbestos removal Wollongong.

What does the insurer or adjuster get from us?

Dated photos before, during and after, the engineer's written advice, the scope we priced against, waste dockets and asbestos clearances. Make safe works are usually covered ahead of the claim being finalised, but we are not the insurer, so check the policy.

How fast can you be in Wollongong?

Call us and we will get someone on the phone who can mobilise a crew. We will tell you straight what the arrival looks like for your site rather than publish a response time.

Other places we do emergency and make safe demolition

We also do emergency and make safe demolition in Sydney, Newcastle, Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. Full structural demolition in Wollongong is on full building demolition Wollongong; every specialist line is under all specialist services.
