What full building demolition means in Wollongong
A full demolition is the whole building coming down: roof, structure, slab and, where the redevelopment needs it, the footings and basement too. Most of the work that decides whether the job goes well happens before the first machine arrives. Hazardous materials are identified and removed under our own licence. Power, gas, water and comms are isolated and capped and the authorities are notified. Neighbouring structures, retained facades and public areas are protected and monitored. Then the structure comes down in an engineered sequence, top to bottom, with high reach excavators and shears doing the work at height rather than people.
Wollongong is about ninety minutes from our Marrickville yard. Plant floats down and stays for the job, and an estimator can be on site within a couple of days. Work in Wollongong runs across Wollongong CBD, Port Kembla and the steelworks corridor, the university and hospital precincts, Unanderra, Shellharbour, Albion Park, Kiama, Nowra and the Shoalhaven. If your job is a partial demolition, a strip out or a single slab, our Wollongong and the Illawarra demolition contractors page covers the wider service list.
What the package includes
Hazmat and asbestos first
Friable and non friable asbestos, lead paint, SMF and PCBs removed under our own licence before demolition starts, with clearance certificates handed over. See asbestos and hazmat removal.
Structural demolition
Engineered sequence, exclusion zones, dust and vibration monitoring, and high reach excavators for anything above a few storeys. Cranes, propping and post tensioned structures are inside our licence.
Slab, footings and basement
Ground slab and footings broken out, basements demolished and backfilled or left open for the new works, with retention and shoring designed where the neighbours are close.
Recycling and steel recovery
Concrete crushed on site or carted to a recycler, steel cut and weighed with the credit shown on the price, and a recycling report for your environmental submission.
Site clearance and handover
Site cleared, levelled and handed back on survey, ready for the piling rig or the civil contractor, with the demolition completion documentation your certifier wants.
Partial and facade retention
Where part of the building or a heritage facade stays, we prop, protect and monitor it and demolish around it. Same crew, same licence, tighter method.
Worth knowing: the hazmat register and the services drawings set the price more than the size of the building does. Send both with the tender and the number will be right the first time. SafeWork NSW is notified before licensed work starts and the demolition plan sits on site.

Questions we get from Wollongong clients
Do you demolish houses in Wollongong?
No. We do not do house knockdowns, knock down rebuilds or homeowner jobs. We demolish commercial, industrial, institutional and infrastructure buildings for builders, developers, asset owners and government. If you are a homeowner a local residential demolisher will serve you better.
What licences and notifications are involved?
We hold a SafeWork NSW demolition licence covering structures above 15 metres, floor propping, tower and heavy mobile cranes and post tensioned structures, plus a friable asbestos removal licence and ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 certified management systems. SafeWork NSW is notified before licensed work starts and the demolition plan sits on site. We handle the notifications, the demolition work plan and the engineering; you do not have to chase them.
How long does a full building demolition take?
It depends on hazmat, structure and access more than on floor area. A clear industrial shed can be down in days once the asbestos is out. A multi storey building on a tight site with services to isolate, floors to prop and neighbours to protect is a programme measured in weeks. Send the drawings and the hazmat register and we will give you dates you can put in your programme.
What happens to the material?
Concrete and brick are crushed on site where the site allows and go out as recycled aggregate, or go to a licensed recycler. Steel is cut, weighed and credited back against the price. Hazardous materials go to licensed facilities with tracked waste dockets. You get the recycling report for your environmental submission.
