Search for demolition companies in Sydney and most of what comes back is house demolition: knock down and rebuild, a single block, a few days on site. That is a different trade from taking down a station concourse next to live rail, cutting out a hospital wing that stays open, or decommissioning an industrial plant. This guide is for the second group: builders, developers, government agencies and asset owners with a commercial, industrial or infrastructure job in Sydney.
If you have been asked to find the biggest demolition companies in Sydney to price a major job, this is the shortlist. We wrote this guide and we are on it, so we have put ourselves first and kept every entry to facts. The other contractors follow in alphabetical order, each described from its own published information as at October 2026. Check licences and insurances directly with any contractor before you engage them, us included.
The biggest commercial demolition contractors working in Sydney
Perfect Contracting
Perfect Contracting was founded in Sydney in 2010 and is based in Marrickville, with a Queensland office at Slacks Creek. It is part of Perfect Group, which also includes Perfect Concrete Care, Perfect Remediation, Perfect Strip Out, Perfect Hire and DeconCut. Its work covers structural and high reach demolition, friable and non-friable asbestos removal, decommissioning, contaminated land remediation, early works and civil.
Licences and systems: SafeWork NSW demolition licence AD211896 and Friable Asbestos Removal Licence AD212957, which covers both Class A and Class B work. One integrated management system certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001. Last financial year the company worked more than 100,000 hours on the tools with zero regulator notices.
It owns its high reach and remote controlled fleet rather than hiring it in: a Volvo EC480 high reach excavator, built up to about 75 tonnes, and Brokk remote controlled demolition robots, run by its own operators. Sydney work includes station demolition for Sydney Metro Southwest, precision demolition at The Bays for Sydney Metro West, the Rosehill Station bridge and friable asbestos decontamination at Horsley Park.
It keeps crews ready to deploy at short notice to regional and remote sites anywhere in Australia, for emergency make-safe work, hazardous materials removal and difficult demolition that local contractors cannot resource. Regional and interstate work includes Bathurst Hospital, a hospital redevelopment in Grafton, Broken Hill and Darwin. See emergency demolition and make-safe.

What to check before you engage a demolition contractor in Sydney
A high reach excavator and remote controlled demolition machines they own
This is the first thing to check on a big job. Structures over about 20 metres, plant inside operating buildings and anything next to live rail or a running hospital are taken down with a high reach excavator from the outside and remote controlled demolition robots, such as Brokks, from the inside. Plenty of demolition contractors in Australia, including some that call themselves commercial, do not own either and hire them in when a job needs one. Hired machines arrive with operators who do not know your site, and only when the hire company has one free. Ask the contractor to list the high reach and remote controlled machines they own, their reach and weight, and who operates them.
The right SafeWork NSW demolition licence
In NSW any demolition of a structure over 15 metres, a chemical installation, a pre or post tensioned structure, or work using a crane over 100 tonnes needs a demolition licence from SafeWork NSW, and the type of licence decides what the contractor can legally take on. Ask for the licence number and check it on the SafeWork NSW public register. Do not accept a licence held by a related company that is not the one signing your contract.
A friable asbestos (Class A) licence, not just Class B
Most commercial buildings in Sydney built before 1990 contain asbestos somewhere. A Class B licence covers bonded (non-friable) material only. If the hazardous materials survey finds friable asbestos, such as pipe lagging, sprayed insulation or damaged board, the removal needs a Class A licence and a Class A supervisor on site. A contractor who holds both can run hazmat removal and demolition as one program instead of handing over between two companies. For a shortlist of specialist friable asbestos and hazmat contractors, see the biggest asbestos removal companies in Sydney.
A certified safety and environmental system
Tier 1 builders and government clients expect ISO 45001 for safety, ISO 14001 for environment and ISO 9001 for quality, audited by an accredited certifier. Ask for the certificates and the expiry dates, and ask how many regulator notices the company received in the last financial year.
Waste tracking and recycling
Concrete, brick and steel from a commercial demolition are mostly recyclable. Contaminated material is not, and has to be classified, tracked and disposed of at a licensed facility. Ask how waste is classified, where it goes and what reporting you will receive.
Which type of contractor fits your job
For a large national program across several states, a contractor with a big national workforce and plant fleet makes sense. For heavy industrial decommissioning in the resources sector, look for a specialist with that track record. For a Sydney job that combines hazardous materials, structural demolition near live operations and remediation of what is left in the ground, a contractor that holds both licences and runs all three scopes under one system saves a handover and a second set of site rules.
Whoever you shortlist, ask for the licence numbers, certificates, a project of similar size and complexity, and a named supervisor before you sign.

Frequently asked questions
Who are the biggest demolition companies in Sydney?
For commercial, industrial and infrastructure work, the established names include Perfect Contracting, Delta Group, Ford Civil Contracting, Liberty Industrial and Metropolitan Demolitions Group. Size alone is not the test. Check the licence class, the plant they own and their record on jobs like yours.
Do I need a licensed demolition contractor for a commercial building in NSW?
Yes, for any structure over 15 metres and for several other categories set out by SafeWork NSW. Asbestos removal needs its own licence: Class B for bonded material and Class A for friable material.
How long does commercial demolition take in Sydney?
It depends on the hazardous materials survey, the approvals, the structure and the site access. Hazmat removal often takes as long as the structural demolition. A contractor should give you a staged program once they have the survey and drawings.
