Search for demolition contractors in Newcastle and most results are house demolition and small site clearing. That is a different job from decommissioning a plant on Kooragang Island, taking down a power station building in the Upper Hunter or demolishing a hospital block that stays open around you. This guide is for builders, asset owners, mines, councils and government agencies with a commercial, industrial or infrastructure job in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the Hunter.
If you have been asked to find the biggest demolition companies to price a major Hunter job, this is the shortlist. Perfect Contracting wrote this guide and appears on it. We have listed ourselves first and stuck to facts for every company, ours included. The other contractors follow in alphabetical order, each described from its own published information or public reporting as at October 2026. Before you engage any of these contractors, including us, confirm their licences and insurances with the issuing body.
The biggest demolition contractors working in Newcastle and the Hunter
Perfect Contracting
Perfect Contracting was founded in Sydney in 2010 and works across NSW and Queensland from offices in Marrickville and Slacks Creek, including the Hunter, Lake Macquarie and the Central Coast. It is part of Perfect Group, which also includes Perfect Concrete Care, Perfect Remediation, Perfect Strip Out, Perfect Hire and DeconCut. Its work covers structural and high reach demolition, friable and non-friable asbestos removal, industrial decommissioning, contaminated land remediation and civil.
Licences and systems: SafeWork NSW demolition licence AD211896 and Friable Asbestos Removal Licence AD212957, which covers both Class A and Class B work. Quality, environment and safety run under one management system, certified to ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001. In the last financial year the crews put in over 100,000 hours on site and the company received no notices from any regulator.
The high reach and remote controlled machines are its own, not hired for the job: a Volvo EC480 high reach excavator built up to about 75 tonnes and a fleet of Brokk remote controlled demolition robots, with operators employed by the company. Work in the region includes demolition at Munmorah Power Station and demolition and remediation at the Muswellbrook water treatment plant.
Crews, supervisors and plant can be on a Hunter or regional site within days for emergency make-safe work, hazardous materials removal and demolition that local contractors cannot resource. Regional and interstate work includes Bathurst Hospital, a hospital redevelopment in Grafton, Broken Hill and Darwin. See emergency demolition and make-safe.

What to check before you engage a demolition contractor in the Hunter
A high reach excavator and remote controlled demolition machines they own
Hunter industrial jobs are the ones where this matters most: boiler houses, conveyor galleries, bunkers and process buildings that are too tall or too fragile to put people in. They come down with a high reach excavator working from outside and remote controlled machines working inside. A surprising number of contractors who quote on this work own neither and go to the hire market when they win, which means your program depends on what is available that month and on an operator who has never seen your site. Ask for a list of the high reach and remote controlled machines the contractor owns, with reach and operating weight, and ask who sits in the cab.
The right SafeWork NSW demolition licence
Demolition of a structure over 15 metres, a chemical installation, a pre or post tensioned structure, or work using a crane over 100 tonnes needs a SafeWork NSW demolition licence. Industrial sites in the Hunter often tick more than one of those boxes. Ask for the licence number, check it on the SafeWork NSW public register, and make sure the licence holder is the company signing your contract.
Class A asbestos, not just Class B
Power generation, coal handling, aluminium and older heavy industry around Newcastle and the Upper Hunter were built with friable asbestos in pipe lagging, gaskets, boiler insulation and switch rooms. That is Class A work. A contractor with only a Class B licence can strip the bonded sheet and then has to bring in a second company for the lagging, which doubles the site inductions and the hand overs. Ask for the Class A licence number and the names of the supervisors on it. For a shortlist of specialist friable asbestos and hazmat contractors, see the biggest asbestos removal companies in Newcastle and the Hunter and the national guide.
Plant and people who can travel
Many Hunter jobs are an hour or more from Newcastle. Ask how the contractor will mobilise their machines, and whether the supervisor and operators are their own employees or hired in for the job.
A certified safety and environmental system
AGL, Origin, Port of Newcastle, the mines and the state agencies will not prequalify a contractor without ISO 45001, ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 from an accredited certifier. Ask for the certificates and their expiry, and ask the harder question: how many improvement or prohibition notices did the regulator issue to the company in the last financial year?
Waste classification and recycling
Industrial steel from a Hunter plant has scrap value that should show up in your price. Concrete can be crushed and reused on site. Contaminated material, fly ash, tank residues and hydrocarbons have to be classified under the NSW waste classification guidelines and tracked to a licensed facility. Ask who classifies the waste, where each stream goes and what records you receive.
