Friable is a different job to bonded sheeting

Most asbestos removalists on the Gold Coast are licensed for bonded material: fibro sheet, vinyl tiles, cement pipe. Friable asbestos is the material that releases fibre when you touch it, and only a Class A licence holder can remove it. That means a sealed enclosure under negative pressure, three stage decontamination units, licensed supervisors on site the whole time, air monitoring by an independent hygienist and a clearance inspection before the enclosure comes down. Few contractors hold the licence and fewer own the plant. We do both.

The Gold Coast is under an hour from our Slacks Creek yard, so plant floats down for the job and a supervisor can be on site quickly. Work on the Gold Coast runs across Southport, Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach, Robina and Varsity Lakes, the Gold Coast University Hospital precinct, Burleigh, Coolangatta, Yatala and the northern industrial corridor. For bonded removal, soil and general hazmat see commercial asbestos removal on the Gold Coast, and for how we mobilise interstate see friable asbestos removal Australia wide.

What we remove under the Class A licence

    Pipe and boiler lagging

Plant rooms, boiler houses, hospitals, schools and older commercial buildings where the insulation is asbestos. Removed in full enclosure, often while the rest of the building keeps operating.

    Sprayed limpet and fireproofing

Structural steel and soffits coated with sprayed asbestos in office towers, car parks and industrial buildings. The slowest, most controlled work we do, and the one most contractors will not touch.

    Loose fill, gaskets and millboard

Ceiling insulation, switchboard backing, gaskets and rope seals in plant and equipment, removed before decommissioning or demolition.

    Fire and storm damaged asbestos

Bonded sheet that has burned or broken becomes friable. We treat it as Class A, make the site safe and remove it. See emergency demolition and make safe.

    Contaminated soil and fill

Friable fragments and fines in soil under and around buildings, remediated and validated as part of contaminated land works.

    Removal ahead of demolition

Full hazmat strip before a building comes down, so the demolition can proceed as clean works under one contractor and one programme.

Worth knowing: the hazardous materials register decides the method and the price. If yours is old or incomplete, say so and we will price a survey first rather than finding friable material mid job and stopping your site. Because we hold the licence ourselves, an unexpected find does not stand the job down while another contractor mobilises.

Licences and how the job runs

We hold a Class A friable asbestos removal licence that Workplace Health and Safety Queensland recognises for work in Queensland, plus non friable removal, a Queensland demolition licence and ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 certified management systems. Every friable job follows the same sequence: register and survey checked, asbestos removal control plan and SWMS issued, Workplace Health and Safety Queensland notified, enclosure built and smoke tested, negative air and decontamination units running, removal by licensed removalists under a licensed supervisor, waste double bagged and tracked to a licensed facility, independent air monitoring throughout, and a clearance certificate before handback.

Questions we get from Gold Coast clients

Do you remove asbestos from houses on the Gold Coast?

No. We do not quote houses, sheds, fences or renovations. Our clients are builders, facilities and asset managers, government, defence, utilities and industry. A homeowner will get a faster and cheaper answer from a local residential removalist.

What is the difference between friable and bonded asbestos?

Bonded asbestos is the fibre locked in cement sheet, vinyl or similar, and a Class B licence covers it. Friable asbestos crumbles by hand: pipe lagging, sprayed limpet, loose fill, gaskets, fire damaged sheet and anything that has been broken up. It needs a Class A licence, a full enclosure under negative pressure, decontamination units, independent air monitoring and a clearance inspection before anyone goes back in. We hold both licences, so a job that has both types stays with one contractor.

Who do you notify and what paperwork do we get?

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland is notified at least five days before licensed removal starts, and we handle that. You get the asbestos removal control plan, the SWMS, waste transport dockets to a licensed facility, the air monitoring results and the independent clearance certificate for your file and your certifier.

Can you do the removal and the demolition or strip out together?

Yes, and that is most of our work. The asbestos comes out under our licence, the clearance is issued, then the same crew moves straight into demolition, strip out or contaminated soil works. One contractor, one programme, no gap between the clearance and the machines.

Other places we remove friable asbestos

This page is about Gold Coast. We also run Class A removal in Sydney, Wollongong, Newcastle, Brisbane and Sunshine Coast, and we mobilise nationally for the jobs that need it.
