Perfect Contracting

Civil Engineer Jobs, Piling and Excavation, Sydney

  • Civil engineer, piling and excavation
  • Sydney, Marrickville office
  • Full time
  • AU work rights required
Apply now, takes 2 minutes

We are hiring a civil engineer in Sydney. Perfect Contracting is a licensed demolition, civil and remediation contractor working for Tier 1 builders, government and industry, and our Sydney civil work is growing: piling, bulk and detailed excavation, shoring and retention installed to the designer's drawings, and moving contaminated material off site the right way. We need an engineer who has done that work on live sites, not just read about it.

This is a site based role out of Marrickville, running the engineering side of our Sydney civil and excavation jobs with our supervisors and crews. You will have real say in how the work gets done and the person you answer to is not six layers away. Sydney only: we are not asking anyone to travel or relocate for this one.

Fill in the form below and someone will ring you back within one business day. It takes about two minutes. Attach a CV if you have one handy, or reply to the confirmation email with it.

    The basics

One minute. Seven quick answers, then a second page about your experience.

We are hiring in NSW, QLD and WA, including FIFO mining work out of Perth. Pick "Anywhere in Australia" if you will travel.
You must already have the right to work in Australia. We are not able to sponsor visas.
Pick the closest one. The next questions change to match.
PDF or Word, up to 5MB. If you do not have one on your phone, submit anyway and reply to our email with it.

    Your experience

The more you tick, the better we can match you to a job.

Optional. Roughly how many years on each of these? Leave blank if it does not apply.

Piling rigs, anchors, shotcrete, soldier piles and shoring. Running it or doing it both count.

    References and availability

Optional now, we will ask when we call you. A work reference or a character reference, name, company and phone.
Fly-in fly-out, drive-in drive-out, or away for a stint. The away jobs usually pay better.
Pick the one that suits you best right now. Regional NSW, regional Queensland and remote sites are all on the list.

A few lines is fine. Real employers and real jobs, because this is what we search when a role comes up.

    What the work is

    • Piling works: bored, CFA, screw and sheet piles, and pile caps, working with the piling subcontractor or our own crew, checking set out, founding levels, pile logs and as-builts against the engineer's design.
    • Bulk and detailed excavation: levels, batters and benching, dewatering, spoil classification and haulage, and keeping the excavation to the geotechnical and structural engineer's requirements.
    • Shoring and retention: installing propping, anchors, shotcrete and retention systems to the designer's drawings and hold points. We install to the engineer's design, we do not design it, and you will hold that line with the client.
    • Contaminated materials: reading the site investigation and the Remediation Action Plan, classifying spoil under the NSW EPA waste classification guidelines, arranging tracking and disposal to licensed facilities, and keeping the records the auditor and the EPA will ask for.
    • The paperwork that goes with it: ITPs, hold point releases, survey and quality records, RFIs, daily records, and the site diary evidence that keeps variations and delays from turning into arguments.

    Experience we look for

Tell us what you have actually done. If you are strong on two of the three and want to learn the third, still apply.

    • A civil engineering degree or equivalent, and at least three years on site on piling, excavation or remediation work in Sydney. Contractor side experience is what we are after.
    • Hands on with piling: you have watched piles go in, checked the logs, dealt with obstructions and out of tolerance piles, and know what the structural engineer will and will not accept.
    • Contaminated land: you have worked to a RAP, classified spoil, dealt with an EPA licensed receiver and kept the disposal records straight. Asbestos in soil experience is a real plus.
    • White Card, a driver licence and the confidence to run a toolbox and a pre-start with a crew. Temporary works or geotechnical exposure, survey skills and Tier 1 site systems all add to your value.
    • Fit for a site based role and happy in a young business that moves fast, where you will be trusted to make calls.

    What it pays

Pay depends on experience. Tell us what you are on and we will be straight with you. A vehicle or vehicle allowance and a phone are part of the package. Travel work pays more, and there is interstate work for people who want it. People tend to stay with us once they start: the crew is energetic, dedicated and good to work alongside, and we back them.

    Other names for this job

Companies label this role differently and so do candidates. If your last title was site engineer, project engineer, piling engineer, ground engineering engineer, geotechnical site engineer, foundation engineer, civil construction engineer, civil contracting engineer, structures site engineer or excavation engineer, and the work involved piling, anchoring, shoring, bulk excavation or contaminated spoil, this is the same job. We hire on what you have run, not on the title.

What we are like to work for

We are a young business and we are growing. That is the honest pitch. It means the structure is not set in concrete, there is room to move up if you are any good, and the person who decides is not six layers away from site. We buy decent gear, we back people who bring a better way of doing something, and safety is not a poster in the lunch room. On Tier 1 jobs it is the thing that keeps you working.

    Work rights

You need the right to work in Australia. We do not sponsor visas and we do not charge anyone a fee to apply or to be placed, ever. If someone asks you for money to get a job with us, it is not us. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are encouraged to apply.

    What happens after you apply

    • You get an email straight away confirming we have your application.
    • Someone rings you within one business day, on the mobile number you give us.
    • If you did not attach a CV, reply to that confirmation email with it. It is the fastest way to get in front of us.
    • We keep your details on file. Even if there is nothing today, we come back to people when the right job lands.

    Where the job is

This role is based at head office in Marrickville and on our Sydney sites: the inner west, the CBD and greater Sydney. We also run crews in the Hunter, Wollongong, Canberra, regional New South Wales and Queensland, and there is interstate work later for anyone who wants it, but for this job we want someone who is already in Sydney and staying here.
