Decommissioning Core Sample Libraries for NSW Regional Government

Decommission three core sample libraries

Project Details

  • Client NSW Regional Government
  • Location Gunnedah, Gulgong, Yerrinbool

Project Overview

The NSW Regional Government required a reliable contractor to decommission three core sample libraries located in Gunnedah, Gulgong, and Yerrinbool. The core samples in these libraries were collected during geological testing and investigation works carried out on mining sites, mainly consisting of sandstone, shale, and sandy materials. These samples, essential for mining analysis, were stored in metal and plastic cases stacked on pallets.

Scope of Works

Perfect Contracting was engaged to carry out various tasks related to the decommissioning process. The project included two main aspects: the disposal of materials and the relocation of specific core samples to a client facility for further use.

  1. Pallet and Core Sample Management
  2. A portion of the pallets containing core samples was designated for disposal. These pallets were transported to local waste facilities, utilizing local waste management contractors. Meanwhile, other pallets, which required retention, were carefully re-strapped and relocated to the client’s facility in Londonderry, Sydney. This facility functions as a laboratory where further testing and investigations on the samples are conducted.
  3. Site Maintenance and Waste Management

In addition to handling the core samples, Perfect Contracting was responsible for a variety of other tasks that ensured the complete decommissioning of the sites. This included:

  • The removal and disposal of pallet racks
  • The replacement of light bulbs and damaged roof sheets
  • The repair of fencing around the property
  • General rubbish disposal
  • Soft landscaping work throughout the sites

These tasks ensured the sites were left in excellent condition, meeting both government and environmental standards.

Project Challenges

A critical challenge in this project was managing the safe transport of core samples. These samples held significant importance for ongoing research and testing, so careful planning was essential. The team also had to coordinate with local waste management contractors to ensure that waste was disposed of according to environmental regulations. Additionally, the variety of tasks – from structural repairs to waste disposal – required a high level of logistical coordination.

Project Outcome

The decommissioning of the core libraries was completed successfully within the project timeline. There were no safety or environmental issues reported during the entire project, which reflects Perfect Contracting’s commitment to maintaining high safety standards. Furthermore, the client was highly satisfied with the outcome, as all core samples were either appropriately disposed of or relocated for further use.

This project showcases Perfect Contracting’s ability to handle complex, multi-faceted jobs efficiently while ensuring compliance with environmental and safety protocols.
